NPORS N401 Appointed Person Training Course

This training course is for operators who require or have a desire to take the relevant NPORS Test in order to gain a RED Trained operator card for Appointed Persons.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the roles / responsibilities, and duties regarding: Appointed Person, Maintenance personnel, Slinger, Crane Erector, Crane Operator, Crane Supervisor
  • Be aware of current legislation and codes of practice relating to lifting operations and maintaining safe working environments
  • Recognise the requirements for standard and complex lifts; including lifting from height
  • Understand obligatory state requirements when lifting of persons
  • Identify a diverse range of crane types and their applications and limitations, including accessories and associated terminology
  • Identify a specific crane suitable for specific lift requirements and select accessories; including, stingers, extra ballast charts, powered boom extensions (types and use), spreader mats, point loading/outriggers, spec sheets and range diagrams
  • Interpret crane documentation effectively, including certificates and inspection reports etc.
  • Setting up different types of lifting equipment for various lifts; including, levelling, erection and dismantling
  • Describe testing and examination requirements regarding lifting equipment and accessories
  • Use the loader crane at its maximum radius and slewing limits
  • Understand and use effectively RCIs / anti-collision systems
  • Securely load, transport and position loads on, into and from the vehicle to predetermined locations
  • Define the correct position and configuration in which to receive loads, e.g. weight identification, centre of gravity; including slinging of balanced and unbalanced loads / slinging sizes and angles and the specified use of stabilisers
  • Effectively manage swing loads
  • Comply with / set-up / program Load Moment Indicators or Rated Capacity Indicators for lifting operations
  • Liaise and report to statutory and utility bodies such as highways, railways, utility works etc if they are affected by lifting operations
  • Be aware of the hazards of overhead and buried services
  • Demonstrate and safely carry out both shut down and securing procedures

Teaching and Assessment

  • 5 day combination of classroom based teaching and practical activity
  • Candidates will demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding through a series of practical tasks assigned by the tester.

Entry Requirements

CITB Health, Safety and Environment test completed and passed within the last two years before the course start date or NPORS test date.

A good level of written and spoken English is paramount to successfully complete this course. If you have any concerns regarding this please contact our office and we can discuss available options (for example, hiring a translator at an additional cost).

Certification

Upon successful completion of both the theory & practical tests the NPORS Operator Card is awarded, valid for three years.
