The DX20 Excavator Mounted Impact Hammer is built for driving sheet piles and steel tubes, even in tough ground conditions. It features a Tilt/Rotator and Quick Hitch Adaptor for smooth manoeuvrability and easy setup.

All hammer and crowd functions are controlled from a cab-mounted control box, allowing precise operation without manual handling. The crowd cylinder applies a controlled downforce during use, keeping the drive plate in firm contact with the pile at all times.

The hammer can be adjusted vertically, swung left or right, and tilted fore or aft using the excavator’s standard functions. It comes with a drive plate and anvil suitable for piles and tubes up to 550mm. For larger diameters, such as 610mm rail stanchions, the plate, and anvil can be easily swapped.

If your project involves granular or cohesive soils where low noise and minimal vibration are priorities, consider our vibratory Piling Hammer (EMV).

FAQs

What type of ground is the Impact Hammer suitable for?

The Impact Hammer is ideal for compacted, rocky, or high-resistance soils where vibratory hammers are less effective.

What is an Excavator Mounted Impact Hammer used for?

The DX20 Excavator Mounted Impact Hammer is designed for driving Sheet Piles and Steel Tubes in and out of the ground.

Can this hammer drive large steel tubes?

Yes. It’s delivered with a drive plate and anvil suited for steel tubes up to 550mm, and optional fittings for tubes up to 610mm (e.g., rail stanchions).

Is it easy to position the hammer for vertical alignment?

Yes. The Tilt/Rotator system provides full control, including left/right swing, fore/aft tilt, and 5° of side adjustment, ensuring precise alignment on uneven ground.

How is the impact hammer controlled?

All hammer and crowd functions are operated from a control box inside the excavator cab, eliminating manual handling and improving safety.

Do you provide installation and setup?

Yes. Groundforce offers on-site installation by qualified engineers to ensure your equipment is safely installed, calibrated, and fully functional.

What are the delivery options?

We offer UK-wide delivery from 18 depots using our FORS Silver-accredited fleet. Fast, compliant collection is arranged at the end of the hire period.

Does the Impact Hammer work well on a range of site conditions?

Yes, side tilt adjustment of five degrees left and right allows it to cope with the slopes and angles of various site conditions. During piling the hammer is automatically guided or crowded in the vertical plane.

How does the Impact Hammer drive the sheets / tubes?

The hammer can be raised or lowered on its axis a short distance by the operation of the crowd cylinder which during the hammer operation, applies a controlled down force between the hammer cage and the pile to maintain contact between the drive-plate and the pile

Is the Impact Hammer energy efficient?

The hammer allows precise matching of energy to suit the pile driving requirements; its double acting cylinder produces high impact energy and fast blow rate making it energy efficient with low hydraulic power requirements.

What size sheets / tubes can the Impact Hammer drive?

The Impact Hammer will be delivered with a drive plate and anvil suitable for driving sheet piles and tubes up to 550mm, for 610mm diameter Tubes (Rail stanchions). The drive plate and anvil will need to be swapped.

Impact Hammer Applications

The Impact Hammer is designed for tough ground conditions where vibratory hammers may not be effective. Common applications include:

  • Railway & Bridge Foundations: drive piles through rock and compact soils

  • Steel Tube Piling: ideal for large-diameter steel tubes and driven columns

  • Marine & Coastal Work: install piles for ports, piers, and breakwaters

  • Offshore & Wind Infrastructure: suitable for supporting heavy foundation elements

  • Heavy Civil Engineering: use in dense soils and engineered backfills

  • Rail Stanchion Installation: compatible with drive plates for up to 610mm piles

Impact Hammer Safety & Compliance

Our hydraulic impact hammers are manufactured and maintained under ISO 9001, ISO 16001, and OHSAS 18001 frameworks.

Each hire includes pressure data, safe loading guidance, and setup documentation. For added safety, the hammer is controlled entirely from the cab and fitted with a crowd system that maintains consistent pile contact.
