FAQs

When would a Super Drag Box be used?

Drag boxes are used as ‘moveable shields’ generally in stable or self-supporting ground conditions.

How do Drag Boxes differ from a traditional Trench Box?

Drag Boxes are not intended for full panel height support of trench walls, as in the case of a traditional Trench Box, however correct use will considerably enhance productivity and safety.

How are Drag Boxes used?

Following an initial excavation, the Drag Box is pulled (dragged) along as the excavation progresses to allow for installation of pipework etc. Note: Always pre-dig the excavation in front of the box.

If concrete pipes are being installed, see Groundforce’s range of Pipe Lifters and Pipe Pushers.

In what size excavations can Super Drag Boxes be used?

They are suitable for use in trenches up to 5m wide x 6.6m deep in reasonable ground conditions.

Are top / rear extensions available for the Super Drag Box?

Yes, it must be noted however that Drag Boxes are very heavy pieces of equipment and certain Drag Box models permit the use of top boxes and/or rear extensions so will require large excavators to handle them safely.

What type of struts are used with Super Drag Boxes?

Front and rear strut configurations can be assembled to achieve the required box width using either fixed length sections or telescopic assemblies.

How many different Super Drag Box sizes and types are available?

Groundforce offer six Super Drag Box sizes to cover a wide range of excavation widths and depths.

Can edge protection be used with Super Drag Boxes?

Drag boxes are intended for use as a shield, however edge protection such as EdgeSafe can be fitted if required. Note: Any voids should be filled if personnel are required to approach the box.

How much do Super Drag Boxes weigh?

The aggregate weight of a Drag Box will essentially be determined by the size of panels used together with the type of struts and associated accessories. In conditions where a lightweight solution is required, the Groundforce Backhoe Drag Box weighing less than 1 tonne is also available.

Do Groundforce offer training courses?

Groundforce Training Services offer industry leading accredited safety training primarily for those working in utilities, construction and civil engineering. From short duration health and safety awareness to more complex or specialist safety consultancy solutions.

Drag Box:Typical Installation Methodology

Groundforce Drag Box is lightweight designed for use with small capacity machines and excavators. This box is ideal for continuous pipe laying operations in self–supporting ground up to 4m in depth.
